49ers lose WR Bruce Ellington for the season

The San Francisco 49ers today announced they have released LB Jason Fanaika and placed WR Bruce Ellington on the Injured Reserve List.

Fanaika (6-3, 270) originally signed with San Francisco as an undrafted rookie free agent out of the University of Utah on May 6, 2016. He appeared in 26 games (18 starts) and registered 88 tackles, 20 tackles for loss and nine sacks in two seasons with the Utes.

Ellington (5-9, 197) was originally selected by San Francisco in the fourth round (106th overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft. In his two seasons with the 49ers, he has appeared in 26 games and registered 19 receptions for 215 yards and two touchdowns to go along with seven rushing attempts for 35 yards and one touchdown. On special teams, he has returned 42 punts for 325 yards (7.7 average) and 50 kickoffs for 1,279 yards (25.6 average) throughout his career.

The 49ers roster currently stands at 75 and must be trimmed to 53 by 1:00 p.m. PT on Saturday.
