Giants announce roster for NL Wild Card game

Eduardo Nunez will not be available for the Giants ahead of their wild-card clash with the New York Mets this evening, with the third baseman yet to recover from a strained hamstring that has put him on the shelf since September 27.

Conor Gillaspie will likely continue to start in Nunez’s spot at third base tonight. Gillaspie hit .300 and knocked in five runs taking over for Nunez in the last two series against the Rockies and Dodgers. Gillaspie has also be sharp with the glove, making a circus catch in the season finale on Sunday. Gordon Beckham, who started at third in Saturday’s game, is not eligible for the postseason.

Veterans Matt Cain, Jake Peavy and Joe Nathan did not make the list of 11 pitchers that will be available tonight. Both Johnny Cueto and Jeff Samardzija will be, however, in another “all hands on deck” game. Cueto is the planned starter for Game 1 of the NLDS on Friday against the Chicago Cubs and Jon Lester should the Giants advance.

San Francisco will have three left-handers available out of the bullpen, with Javier Lopez, Will Smith and rookie Steven Okert.

The Giants elected not to make third catcher Tony Sanchez available, something that would’ve allowed Bruce Bochy to use Trevor Brown as a pitch-hitter without fear of not having an emergency replacement for Buster Posey.
