Chip Kelly: We still haven’t decided on a starting quarterback

A few days after saying the quarterback position was undecided after a 33-21 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, Chip Kelly joined the Murph and Mac show on Monday morning to talk 49ers football.

He’s still not ready to make that decision.

“We’ll get together as a staff today and look at our game plan in terms of moving forward and what we’re going to do with everyone,” Kelly said. “I think as I said the day after the game at our press conference, we’ve got to evaluate everything. Part of it is looking at what type of game plan were putting together for the Bills and meet with our training staff, find out whose available, and go from there.”

So Colin Kaepernick is still under consideration for the starting quarterback job?

“It’s fair to say we’re looking at every option,” Kelly said. “We’re looking at every option we have to be a good football team. I don’t think it’s different than any other position on our team. Obviously, that position gets the most notoriety, but we have to look at everything right now.”

Murph continued to press Kelly on the latest Kaepernick news. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the 49ers and the quarterback were close to finalizing a new contract that remove a $14.5 million injury stipulation. Kelly refused to elaborate on Rapoport’s report and wanted to make one thing clear: nobody tells him who plays and doesn’t play. Playing time decisions are Kelly’s alone.

“I don’t get that part of it,” Kelly said. “He played in our first game. So, I’ve never been told not to play him, or he shouldn’t play. If I was told not to play, then why’d he play in the first game against the Rams? If I was concerned about his contract or him getting hurt? I’ve never been told by anyone in this building who to play at what position.”

Kelly said the coaching staff worked all day Friday, but took Saturday and Sunday for themselves. The players are still off on Monday but the coaches will put together the Buffalo Bills game tape of their win over the Rams on Sunday.
