Warriors exec Harris: We’ll field trade deadline phone calls, won’t initiate any

The NBA trade deadline is 10 days away. Will the Warriors be looking to add one final piece before locking in their roster for the rest of the year?

Warriors director of player personnel Larry Harris joined Gary and Larry and discussed what type of role the Warriors may play on deadline day.

“We’ll take phone calls, we’re not going to initiate any,” Harris said. “But we’ll take phone calls as teams are interested. If they need us maybe in a three-way deal or they see something that could help us. I can tell you from Bob (Myers) and Travis (Schlenk) and Kirk’s (Lacob) standpoint, were certainly not generating calls.

“And not because we’re being arrogant or anything, it’s just with our team the way it is right now, we’ve got three young guys in (Kevin) Looney, (Patrick) McCaw and Damian (Jones) that aren’t seeing much time. And with the loss of Zaza (Pachulia) and (David) West, we’ve had a chance to evaluate our guys up front and Looney’s done a nice job in his minutes that he’s played. Obviously, (JaVale) McGee’s been terrific. As we look at our roster moving forward, I think where we’re going to grow is within our own team.”

What about McGee? Was Harris the one who played an instrumental role in bringing him here? Actually, no. The credit goes to a Warrior teammate.

“First off, Andre Iguodala playing with him in Denver was first the driving force behind it,” Harris explained. “Andre was really the one that came to management and said, ‘Hey if we need someone, you ought to give this guy a second chance.’”
