Brian Hoyer: Nothing will be crazier than my QB competition with Johnny Manziel

SANTA CLARA – Bryan Hoyer is uniquely situated to deal with an quarterback competition.

When Hoyer signed on Thursday, March 9th, he was the only quarterback the San Francisco 49ers had on their roster, but the veteran doesn’t expect it to remain that way.

“In Cleveland I had to deal with a quarterback competition with Johnny Manziel,” Hoyer said. “The next year I had a quarterback competition on (HBO’s) Hard Knocks. Nothing is going to be crazier to me than what I’ve been through.”

Hoyer spent two seasons in Cleveland with the Browns. During his second year with the team in 2014 Kyle Shanahan was brought on as the team’s offensive coordinator. Hoyer said that his familiarity with Shanahan also played into his decision to join the 49ers.

“I know Kyle went through (the Johnny Manziel experiment) with me in Cleveland, and he’s in charge now. He’s not going to let something like that happen. There was a trust factor there, knowing he’s not going to beat around the bush. Kyle’s a straightforward guy.”
