Detailing how Elvis Dumervil changes the 49ers defensive line

Monday the San Francisco 49ers signed Elvis Dumervil, bolstering a defensive front that was only 19th in the NFL last year in sacking opposing quarterbacks.

Dumervil has 99 career sacks, good for fourth best among active players. He’s been selected to the Pro Bowl five times, and led the NFL in sacks in 2009 with 17. We caught up with former NFL scout Larry Krueger to get his opinion on how Dumervil will fit into Robert Saleh’s defense.

“This is a guy who played with John Lynch,” said Krueger. “This is a tough guy. This is a guy who played most of 2015 with a 60% torn achilles, and he played the full 16-game schedule because his team needed him, and there were a bunch of guys hurt on his defense.

“Are they getting Elvis Dumervil from a few years ago…2009 when he led the NFL in sacks? No. But what you are getting, is probably a guy who you know is going to give you his best, and a guy they can use in the rotation at the “Leo” spot.”
