With their outlook for this season looking pretty bleak, the Giants are hopeful that this year’s draft can help boost the team’s prospects for turning things around in the near future.

In the eighth round, the Giants selected Cal State Fullerton left-hander John Gavin. The junior southpaw pitcher is a San Jose native who is 8-2 this season with a 2.67 ERA and 89 strikeouts. Gavin went to St. Francis High School and has been a die-hard Giants fan his entire life.

With Cal State Fullerton heading to the College World Series and getting drafted by his hometown team, Gavin told The Audible it’s been one of the best weeks of his life.

“I feel like there’s a lot of dreams becoming realities in the last week or so for me and I just feel really fortunate,” Gavin said. “I was looking around my room at all the Giants memorabilia and I was in absolute awe. It gives me goosebumps every time I talk about it. I love my Giants and I can’t wait, I’m really excited. I’m just trying to enjoy the moment. My mom always tells me…just be where your feet are. It’s just been such a fun ride. Regardless of who you get drafted by is a life long dream fulfilled [but] getting drafted by my hometown team…this is probably one of the biggest dreams I’ve ever had come true. I kinda broke down in tears when I realized it. Just an unbelievable feeling.”

As the 246th overall pick Gavin is slotted to make a $154,200 signing bonus.
