Kuiper on possible Giants fire sale: ‘I can’t remember the last time’

It’s been a long time since the San Francisco Giants were sellers.

So long, in fact, that not even Duane Kuiper can remember.

Kuiper joined KNBR’s Murph & Mac Show Tuesday morning after the Braves’ 9-0 rout of the Giants, their seventh straight loss. At 26-46, tied for the worst record through 72 games in San Francisco Giants history, Kuiper expressed that although logic points to the first massive sale in recent memory, there’s still no clear sign over what the Giants are going to do.

“I can’t remember the last time… Even in the Bonds years, there was no fire sale whatsoever,” Kuiper said. “Or not a fire sale, but trying to get rid of some veteran guys to beef up your organization. I don’t know what’s going to happen. But I do think a year like this is going to give you some time to evaluate some of your prospects.”

The Giants have already begun that process, first by calling up Christian Arroyo, and then trying out Orlando Calixte and Austin Slater. They’ll also get a chance to evaluate their newest call-up, Kyle Crick, after Derek Law was sent down to Triple-A Tuesday morning.

“This is what you have to do. And when you do that, you’re really going to suffer with wins and losses. You’re trying to evaluate and win at the same time, and you’re trying to do it at the big league level,” he said. “That combination of not playing well and looking at young guys really puts you on pace to lose a lot of games. It’s hard. It’s hard when you’re so used to having a team that’s going to compete, and is going to compete to get to the playoffs, or even compete to be in contention in September. When you’re used to that, it’s hard to go backwards.”
