SAN FRANCISCO – Eric Byrnes joined Tom Tolbert and John Lund to screen Diamond to the Rough, his documentary about long distance ultra running.

Former Oakland Athletic and Arizona Diamond back switched to ultra running after his retirement from the MLB in search of what could push his athleticism further. Byrnes’ documentary covers his preparation for the Western States 100-mile Endurance Run.

“It’s baby steps,” said Byrnes before the screening. “You start at the core and the core for a kid wanting to be a professional athlete is relentless work. All of the sudden it gets to a higher level and then all the sudden you realize ‘I’m here’.”

He attributed his athleticism to persistence and that his process was rooted in hard work.

“Do you know what my process was?” said Byrnes. “I started at the root and the root was doing that first 50K. Then surrounded myself with people that knew what they were doing and [would] help me along.”
