Posey selected for third straight All-Star start

It’s been a forgone conclusion for several weeks now, but Buster Posey was officially recognized Sunday night for his standout season by being named starting catcher for the National League in the 2017 MLB All-Star Game.

Posey has held a substantial lead in fan votes at the position over Willson Contreras of the Cubs and the Cardinals’ Yadier Molina for the past few voting updates. He’s hitting a career-best .340 with 10 home runs and 35 RBIs for the Giants this season. It’ll be his third consecutive start at catcher for the National League, and his fifth All-Star appearance overall.

The Giants are just 33-51 this season but Posey has been a consistent bright spot in his ninth season with San Francisco. It’s a testament to his consistency that Posey’s having arguably his best year when the Giants are at their lowest.

Posey is likely to be the only representative the Giants will have in Miami for the All-Star Game on Tuesday, July 11. If that holds true, it’s the first time the Giants have had only one All-Star since Barry Bonds started the game in San Francisco in 2007.
