Austin Slater headed to disabled list with hip flexor injury

If you’re a young San Francisco Giants’ player, good luck staying healthy.

Hours after the Giants placed 23-year-old infielder Ryder Jones on the disabled list with a wrist contusion, rookie left fielder Austin Slater suffered a hip flexor injury in the bottom of the eighth inning of San Francisco’s 6-1 loss to the Miami Marlins.

Slater re-aggravated an injury he sustained two weeks ago that kept him out of the Giants’ lineup for a few days on Friday while running out a groundball in the late stages of San Francisco’s loss.

After the game, Slater said he would have an MRI on Saturday, but Giants’ skipper Bruce Bochy said the team’s starting left fielder is definitely headed for the disabled list.

“Same thing, yeah, he’s going to be out for a little while,” Bochy said. “Same thing, same area, he’s been feeling good there. He hadn’t been complaining about it at all so it’s a bad break for the kid and for us. He was doing a nice job out there. But he’s going to be down for a little while. I can’t tell you how long but he’ll be on the DL.”

Bochy said he wasn’t sure what the corresponding move for the Giants would be, especially considering so many of the player on their 40-man roster are battling injuries.

Slater’s injury comes a few days after the Giants’ top hitting prospect, Christian Arroyo, was placed on the disabled list with AAA Sacramento after Arroyo sustained a fractured hand. Arroyo, Jones and Slater are three of the organization’s top position player prospects, and all three are now injured.
