McCovey: ‘I really thought Brandon Crawford would have a breakout year’

Nobody could’ve seen the 2017 season shaking out the way it has for the San Francisco Giants, who find themselves 19 games under .500 and 24 games out of first place in the division just before the All-Star Break.

Even with the Giants winning seven of their past 10 games, questions regarding what has gone wrong and what the team’s strategy should be entering the trading deadline are still present.

Hall of Famer and Giants legend Willie McCovey joined Murph and Mac on Friday morning to discuss the Giants struggles and why the team shouldn’t blow up the team after just one bad year

“It’s tough,” McCovey said. “And it’s really hard to put your finger on why it’s going bad because it’s basically the same team. It’s just a lot of guys are not having good years. This was one year where I really thought [Brandon] Crawford was going to break out and have a super year. It started out that way, in how he looked at the World Baseball Classic but it just hasn’t panned out. That’s true with a bunch of guys. In order to win, you have to have two or three guys having career years, and we don’t have that this year.”

Crawford won the Silver Slugger Award in 2015 and hit .275 in 2016 with 12 home-runs and 84 RBI’s. So far, the Giants shortstop is hitting just .223 on the season, as he is one of a few Giants that have not performed up to the standard they have shown in prior seasons.

“I think it’s ok to have a bad year. That’s part of baseball. You can’t have great years every year. Some of these same guys will probably bounce back next year.”
