DeAngelo Williams won’t play for Cowboys because he grew up a 49ers fan

Free agent running back DeAngelo Williams has always been one to speak his mind, but typically he’s expressing disdain toward Roger Goodell or one of the NFL’s arcane rules or guidelines. Now, Williams is opening up his frank honesty to new levels, telling Adam Schefter on his podcast that he has four teams he’ll outright refuse to sign with despite the fact that he doesn’t currently have a job in the league.

Williams, an 11-year veteran, just finished up two seasons in Pittsburgh and still hasn’t found a new landing spot with the preseason ramping up soon. Don’t expect Williams to get desperate, though. He told Schefter that he definitely plans to play next year, but that he has four teams he won’t suit up for.

One of the teams on Williams’ no-sign list is his former squad, the Panthers. Williams said he didn’t like the way they treated him on his way out in 2014 after he was with the team for nine years. Two other teams, the Browns and Jaguars, aren’t appealing to Williams because of their subpar rosters and recent results.

The fourth and final franchise that you won’t see Williams taking handoffs for is the Dallas Cowboys. But why, you might ask? The Cowboys have young stars that could benefit from Williams’ presence in the same way Pittsburgh’s vaunted offense did the past two seasons. Well, it turns out Williams’ disdain for Dallas stems from his childhood, when he grew up as a fan of the San Francisco 49ers.

“My fandom for the team I was raised as will not allow me to go to the Cowboys,” Williams said to Schefter. “I’m an ’80s baby… and the 49ers ruled the ’80s. The Cowboys somewhat did something in the ’90s. I even refuse to give them that.”

The 49ers won four Super Bowls between 1982 and 1990, while Dallas won three titles in the 90s, thus creating the battle of dynasties. Williams went on to rip the Cowboys and their fans for being ‘extremely super annoying’ last season during the team’s 13-3 regular season.

The 49ers themselves may not need another running back like Williams for the upcoming season, but at least they’ll know they have a supporter in DeAngelo.
