Span: ‘Don’t blow up the whole operation’

Denard Span has been a consistently solid performer for the Giants in a season where the team has lacked consistency from top to bottom. He missed some with an injury but otherwise has improved from last season and is hitting .286 with seven home runs while manning center field for the Giants.

Although he hasn’t been with the team long, Span has established himself as a steady presence as a leadoff hitter. Joining Murph and Mac on KNBR Thursday, Span said the support of the fans has made it that much more enjoyable and easier to run out to center every day in the midst of the struggles the Giants have had this season.

Span also said he still has confidence in this team the way it’s presently constructed, and said although some minor adjustments could help, an overhaul would be unnecessary.

“There’s a lot of winners in this clubhouse, a lot of guys that have won rings, a lot of guys that have been to the playoffs, so we’re not going to give up,” Span said. “The season has not gone the way we wanted it to go, it sucks, we can’t even put our finger on what the hell is going on, but at the same time like I said, we’re not going to give up. We’re going to continue to just lay it out there. That’s the main thing, we’ve got nothing to lose, that’s what we’re saying right now. Let’s just go out there and finish this thing off respectable and see what happens. You never know.

“I’m not saying we don’t need any changes, but don’t blow up the whole operation, that’s all I’m saying.”
