Steve Kerr shares hilarious stories of prank calling radio shows as a kid

Steve Kerr joined Tolbert and Lund on KNBR Wednesday afternoon to chat about how the offseason is going, both for the Warriors and for him personally. The coach said he’s taking some time to unwind and relax in San Diego, and in his free time he said he likes to watch Dodgers games. Kerr grew up in LA and with the Dodgers playing so well right now, it’s a good time to be a fan.

The mention of the Dodgers caused Tom Tolbert to recall a story he’d heard that Kerr used to prank call Dodgers radio stations while growing up. He asked Kerr about it, who at first reluctantly acknowledged he did have a career as a prank-calling kid. Kerr then opened up about his past and hilarity ensued. One incident in particular that Kerr remembered was when he and his friend set themselves up to call in back-to-back on LA sports radio host Bud Furillo’s show.

“In the (Steve) Garvey heyday, I remember calling just to get Bud Furillo angry, you remember Bud Furillo? He was an unabashed Dodgers fan. So my buddy and I used to call in separately, or if we were together. So we collaborated one day, Bud was all excited about the Dodgers and the Angels, they were both having huge years, and we collaborated. I was the first caller, he was the second. My call was that the Dodgers need to trade Steve Garvey – and Garvey was God back then – so Furillo’s angry, he’s like ‘We can’t trade Garvey!’ And then my buddy is next, and he says the Angels need to trade Rod Carew. Furillo is so angry, he’s like ‘Can’t we get some better calls here, the Dodgers and Angels are doing great. Why do you guys want to trade everybody!’”

Kerr went on to say that he and his friends had a tape of about 20-25 of their greatest calls into various radio shows. Kerr said he’s since lost the tape, but added that he would pay anything to get it back. It included calls into a psychology show, a movie show and even a botany show.

The coach recalled a few other specific prank calls he made in the clip below, including one where he pretended like he thought Apollo Creed from the “Rocky” movies was a real person. Listen to the conversation about prank calling with Kerr, Tolbert and Lund below.
