Morse still recovering from concussion, Giants unsure about his future

Michael Morse is 35 years old and has played more than 100 games in a season just once since 2012.

Morse’s best season in the last five years came in 2013, when he appeared in 131 contests for the Giants and hit 16 home runs while driving in 61 runs.

Nevertheless, Morse was a popular clubhouse figure and swung a powerful bat, and this offseason, San Francisco was willing to reengage with Morse in hopes he could provide the team with a veteran bench presence.

Even after a hamstring injury curtailed his efforts to make the Major League club in Spring Training, San Francisco convinced Morse to continue playing, and eventually, the outfielder and first baseman rejoined the team in late April.

However, in a late May contest against the Washington Nationals, Morse sustained a concussion as he rushed to the mound to break up a brawl between Giants’ reliever Hunter Strickland and Nationals’ star Bryce Harper. When Morse arrived on the scene, he bashed into Jeff Samardzija and sustained a significant concussion, which landed him on the disabled list, where he’s remained into late July.

On Friday, Giants’ manager Bruce Bochy was asked about Morse’s whereabouts, as he hasn’t been spotted in San Francisco’s clubhouse in recent weeks.

“He’s (Morse) in Florida,” Bochy said. “He’s still recovering from the concussion symptoms so I haven’t talked to Michael in awhile but he decided to go back and spend some time home to relax and spend it with his family until he completely gets over this.”

The Fort Lauderdale, Florida native is not expected back in the near future, and it’s unclear whether Morse will ever play another game for the Giants, or at the Major League level for that matter.

Though Morse was hitting just .194 with one home run at the time he sustained his injury, Bochy indicated the Giants miss his upbeat spirit. While the Giants are hoping Morse is able to make a full recovery soon, Bochy is unsure whether Morse plans on returning to the club.

“He’ll have to make a decision,” Bochy said. “I don’t know where he’s at with that.”
