Giants’ top pitching prospect out for rest of season [report]

The season from hell continues.

Just a month before a potential call-up to the big league club, top pitching prospect and 2018 rotation option Tyler Beede has been ruled out for the rest of the season after sustaining a groin strain while warming up for his last start, according to Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area.

While Beede’s call-up would’ve had minimal effect on this already lost Giants season, the timing is less than ideal for the former first-round pick, who is coming off an excellent performance in which he allowed just one run over seven-innings of work with the Sacramento River Cats. Despite an inconsistent season in which he posted a 4.67 ERA overall with AAA Sacramento, Beede is having his best month, peaking with a 3.57 ERA in July.

Beede is currently the only Giants prospect on Baseball America’s Top 100 list for 2017, coming in at 89th overall. According to Pavlovic, Beede will likely spend his summer pitching in the Arizona Fall League to get more innings under his belt, as he hopes to make the big league rotation during Spring Training next season. Beede has pitched just 109 innings with the River Cats this season.

Beede is now the third top prospect that would likely be with the major league club if not for injury. Third baseman Christian Arroyo is still in Arizona rehabbing his hand after being hit by a pitch, while left field hopeful Austin Slater is also dealing with a groin injury that put him on the shelf after seemingly winning a starting spot.
