Giants to don special uniforms during inaugural Players Weekend

Giants’ players wear the same three to four jerseys for an entire 162-game season.

That routine will be put on hold from August 25-27 during the inaugural MLB Players Weekend.

Players across the league are encouraged to get a bit innovative, and are allowed to personalize the back of their jerseys with a preferred nickname.

Additionally, each player has the option to wear a “tribute patch” on a sleeve that bears the name of someone a player wishes to recognize for helping with his success to the big league level.

On Wednesday, Giants fans were able to get their first look at jerseys that the team will be sporting when they take on the Diamondbacks in Arizona.

Among the notable Giants nicknames – Madison Bumgarner as “Mad-Bum,” Mark Melancon as “Stretch,” Hunter Pence as “Wawindaji,” and Jeff Samardzija as “Shark.”

Game-worn Players Weekend jerseys will be auctioned off with 100 percent of proceeds donated to the MLB-MLBPA Youth Development Foundation.
