Giants place Panik on concussion disabled list, Calixte called up

The Giants were already playing without one starter on the right side of their infield due to a concussion.

Now, they’re without both their starting first baseman and their starting second baseman.

On Tuesday afternoon, San Francisco placed Joe Panik on the seven-day concussion disabled list, where he’ll join teammate Brandon Belt.

Panik was hit in the face with a throw from Nationals’ outfielder Michael Taylor while attempting to score on Sunday evening, and even though he told reporters after Sunday’s game that he felt fine, he apparently began to experience concussion symptoms and the Giants will keep him out of action for the next week.

Belt did not travel to the east coast with the Giants this week after sustaining a concussion more than a week ago in a loss against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Both Panik and Belt have a history of dealing with concussions, and the Giants are likely to be as cautious as possible before either player is cleared to return.

With Panik out, the Giants called up infielder Orlando Calixte from AAA Sacramento to take his place on the 25-man roster. Calixte has already appeared with the Giants this season, and he had traveled to the east coast to be the Giants’ 26th player for their doubleheader against the Nationals.

Kelby Tomlinson will start in Panik’s place at second base on Tuesday, just as Tomlinson did on Monday evening when Panik received a planned day off from manager Bruce Bochy.
