The Giants were hopeful that after top prospect Christian Arroyo underwent surgery to repair a fractured hand in July, that Arroyo would return to the Major League club in September.

On Thursday morning, Giants’ general manager Bobby Evans confirmed those hopes have been dashed, and said Arroyo is out for the season.

“He (Arroyo) won’t be back,” Evans told Murph and Mac on KNBR 680 on Thursday morning. “He’s going to hopefully get some winter ball opportunities but he will not be healthy enough this season to come back during the regular season.

Arroyo earned an early season call-up to the Major Leagues after hitting .446 in Sacramento, but in 32 games with the Giants, Arroyo hit just .192 and posted an on-base percentage of .244.

Arroyo was hit on the hand by a pitch playing for the AAA Sacramento River Cats in early July, and has not played since the injury. Arroyo needed surgery to repair his hand, and Evans said he will not play for San Francisco again in 2017.

Evans indicated the Giants now want the 22-year-old prospect to receive at-bats during the offseason in either the Arizona Fall League or in winter ball.
