Cueto throws three scoreless innings in Sacramento rehab start

Johnny Cueto appeared to show no lingering symptoms of his previous injuries that sent him to the disabled list for the majority of the second half of the season.

After combating both blisters and a forearm strain, Cueto made his first rehab appearance for AAA Sacramento Tuesday, tossing three scoreless innings over 47 pitches, 32 of which were strikes. He gave up back-to-back singles in the first inning, but escaped the frame unscathed and only allowed one hit the rest of the way.

Cueto’s fastball reportedly tapped out at 89 miles per hour and he struck out one batter.

Giants’ manager Bruce Bochy indicated that Cueto will need at least one more start before rejoining San Francisco’s rotation, but the Giants’ training staff will evaluate Cueto on Wednesday before determining when his next appearance will take place.

Rookie Chris Stratton has assumed Cueto’s spot in the Giants’ rotation during his absence, and has compiled back-to-back scoreless outings in his place. With Stratton pitching well, the Giants may consider employing a six-man rotation upon Cueto’s return.
