49ers to release Ahmad Brooks [report]

Ahmad Brooks has played the past eight seasons with the San Francisco 49ers. There won’t be a ninth.

According to Matt Barrows, the 49ers plan to release their longest tenured defensive player.

Brooks has been battling with Eli Harold for the starting spot at outside linebacker. Harold started the 49ers’ most recent preseason game versus the Denver Broncos.

Barrows reports that Brooks’ release may be delayed while the 49ers see if there are any suitors for the 33-year-old, who is owed $6.1 million in the upcoming season.

Brooks has started for the 49ers since the 2011 season. He amassed 51.5 sacks in his eight seasons with San Francisco, and led or was tied for the team lead in sacks since the 2013 season.

Brooks departure means that Navorro Bowman is the only defensive player remaining on the 49ers that started in Super Bowl 47.
