SANTA CLARA – C.J. Beathard didn’t run a 40-yard dash at the combine before getting drafted by the 49ers in the third round of the 2017 draft. San Francisco drafted the Iowa product for his arm, not his legs.

But Thursday when Beathard had a chance to show off his scrambling ability, he didn’t disappoint. Early in the second quarter the rookie ran left, made a vicious cut in the middle of the field to shake Chargers DB Dwight Lowery and took it 62 yards to the house.

“Obviously if I didn’t think I could make that guy miss I probably would have tried to slide,” said Beathard. “But I felt like I could make him miss and it worked.”

“Honestly, I was kind of surprised like, ‘Man, I can’t believe I just scored.’ I was tired and then a bunch of guys came over and jumped on me. I was out of breath, but it was really exciting.”

After the long touchdown, the rookie said Joe Staley jokingly tried to give him an Oxygen mask, to which he quickly turned down.

“He brought me the oxygen mask afterwords. I was like, ‘Man get that out of here.’ But no, that was fun.”

Beathard finished the game 5-for-9, good for 31 yards and a passer rating of 62.7. After the game, head coach Kyle Shanahan said that he has already decided who will be the team’s backup quarterback, but won’t release the depth chart until Saturday.

If Thursday’s game is any indication, Beathard will be safe from the weekend’s cuts. The rookie started the game, and played the entirety of the first half.
