Durant embraces cupcake joke, to release Nike ‘Red Velvet’ shoe Friday

It looks like Kevin Durant is getting the last laugh.

The Warriors’ superstar continues to embrace the “cupcake” moniker given to him by Oklahoma City fans last year, announcing the release of the “KDX Red Velvet” on Tuesday, the newest colorway of his signature KD 10 shoe. Nike released this picture of the shoe surrounded by cupcakes, along with a tongue in cheek description.

Via Nike news release:

With a style of play as smooth as velvet, KD is known for having the most fluid game in the game today. Effortlessly making defenders look helpless, always ready to cook his next victim. He dominates the game with unrivaled versatility, forever motivated by the sweet taste of victory. At the end of the day, winning is all that matters and anything else is just icing on the cake. The KDX ‘Red Velvet’ celebrates the smoothest player in the game and his undying quest for the sweet taste of victory.

The cupcake moniker was started by Durant’s former teammate Kendrick Perkins, who used to jokingly refer to his teammates as cupcakes when he thought they were being or acting soft, a joke that was eventually picked up by the entire Thunder team. It was therefore no coincidence when Russell Westbrook tweeted a caption-less picture of cupcakes on Twitter following Durant’s decision to sign with Golden State last offseason, a jab which escalated during the Warriors’ first visit to Oklahoma City, where fans wore cupcake t-shirts, held cupcake signs and chanted “cupcake” at KD throughout the game.

This isn’t the first time Durant has embraced this attempt at trolling him. He was spotted over the summer wearing a cupcake hat with a ring on top of it while playing in a celebrity softball game put on by teammate JaVale McGee.

The new Red Velvet colorway is available Friday.
