Bochy on Giants’ abundance of mistakes: ‘It shouldn’t be happening on a major league level’

SAN FRANCISCO-Wednesday night marked yet another disappointing loss for Bruce Bochy’s Giants, as they dropped the final two games of the series to propel the Dodgers out of their losing streak and back into the win column.

But it wasn’t the loss that left the skipper irked. It was the plethora of defensive mistakes attributed to the Giants’ defense in the series. After the Giants’ followed up Tuesday’s night’s sloppy performance with a two-error game on Wednesday, Bochy didn’t beat around the bush in stating that they need to be better.

“You hate to play like this in this series,” Bochy said. “You’re playing a good team like the Dodgers — as well as they’re playing you have to play your best ball. It’s frustrating. We need to clean it up here, communicate better. We’re just making too many mistakes.

“It’s happening too often. It shouldn’t be happening on a major league field. These are things we need to get better at. Like I said, this season is hopefully a learning season, a teachable season for all of us to get better.”

Defensive miscues emerged for the second night in a row when Hunter Pence and the respective second baseman (Tuesday it was Joe Panik, Wednesday it was Kelby Tomlinson) allowed a pop-up to fall in between the two. Pablo Sandoval followed the next play immediately with a throwing error of his own, then botched a tag on a steal attempt by Yasiel Puig. Fans were not impressed, and neither was Bochy.

“We need to communicate. It’s not an easy play, but at the same time for it to happen back-to-back nights — that’s a rare deal, but it did happen. It’s something we have got to get fixed here,” he added.

“Our defense has gotten away from us. That’s what’s been disappointing.
