Bruce Bochy would welcome ‘a new look’ at first base [report]

Not much has gone well for the Giants this season and Brandon Belt is a prime example.

Belt was in the midst of one of his better seasons with the team when his year was cut short after being hit in the head by a pitch from Diamondbacks’ pitcher Anthony Banda. Belt, who has a history with concussions, suffered the fourth of his career that night, and that concussion ultimately brought an end to his season.

It was just one of a multitude of things that have gone wrong for the Giants, especially considering Belt had displayed the best showing of power hitting on the team, tying his season-high of 18 home runs with two months left to play.

Belt’s streaky hitting has frustrated both fans and management, and according to a report from The San Francisco Chronicle, the Giants may be open to taking a second look at first base.

The Chronicle’s Bruce Jenkins reported that with Belt’s big contract and recent concussion issues, sources suggested that manager Bruce Bochy “would welcome a new look” at first base.

While Belt leaving San Francisco doesn’t appear very likely anytime soon, the report does raise questions concerning Belt’s long-term status with the club. Belt signed a six-year extension with the Giants in 2016, and is owed $64 million through 2021.
