Tim Ryan: Two weeks in a row ‘the 49ers have got a short end of the stick from the zebras’

The 49ers’ final drive of Thursday evening’s 41-39 loss to the Los Angeles Rams featured a questionable offensive pass interference call.

But that call against wide receiver Trent Taylor wasn’t the only penalty that had 49ers’ color commentator Tim Ryan riled up.

“I’m hot, man,” Ryan said after the game. “Because those calls by the officials at the most critical times in the game to me looked like phantom calls. And they weren’t just routine calls, they were impact plays that Dontae Johnson pass interference at the start of the game. They get off the field on third down. There’s a sack, some bogus pass interference call, that was awful. The Juszczyk hold down by the goal line and they’ve got to settle for a field goal. That’s awful. And the Trent Taylor one at the end.”

Ryan said that he felt Thursday’s loss marked the second straight game in which the 49ers’ games have been officiated poorly, as he was also unhappy with some of the calls that went against the team in its 12-9 loss to Seattle on Sunday.

“It’s hard enough to win in this league,” Ryan said. “Two weeks in a row, in my opinion, the 49ers have got a short end of the stick from the zebras. I mean, come on.”

Play-by-play broadcaster Ted Robinson took Ryan’s side of the argument, and said that in his time on the job, it’s hard to remember a worse stretch of officiating.

“I detest diving into officiating because I recognize having been one once upon a time and it’s a hard job, but I will just say that I think the worst three week stretch of officiating since I’ve been here on this job,” Robinson said.
