Bochy: Matt Cain to pitch at AT&T Park against Padres

The Giants paid tribute to their past by signing the beloved Ryan Vogelsong to a one-day deal so he could finish his career with the black and orange. After Larry Baer hinted at a similar ceremony for Matt Cain by the season’s end, Bruce Bochy confirmed that Cain will pitch against the San Diego Padres during the final home series of the season.

“We do, but we’re going to talk about it in Arizona,” Bochy said Saturday evening. “I mean, he’s going to pitch at home, it’s just a matter of when and how much.”

Starting in 2005, Cain pitched his way into Giants folklore with an impressive 13-year career spent entirely in San Francisco. On top of his two World Series championship rings and three All-Star appearances, Cain threw the only perfect game in franchise history in 2012.

Nonetheless, the writing is on the wall for Cain’s career and it is unlikely that the Giants will pursue their former ace when he hits free agency in 2018. For everything he has done for the Giants, they will do their best to return the favor with one final appearance at AT&T Park.
