Jed York releases statement, calls Trump comments ‘callous and offensive’

The San Francisco 49ers’ Jed York was one of a handful of NFL owners who released public statements on Saturday afternoon in response to comments made by President Donald Trump on Friday evening.

At a rally in Huntsville, Alabama on Friday, President Trump called on NFL owners to “fire” players who protested during the national anthem, and used an expletive to describe said players who kneel or sit.

On Saturday, York, Stephen Ross of the Miami Dolphins and Giants’ owners John Mara and Steve Tisch all released statements regarding Trump’s comments, which they viewed as divisive.

“The callous and offensive comments made by the President are contradictory to what this great country stands for,” York’s statement said. “Our players have exercised their rights as United States citizens in order to spark conversation and action to address social injustice. We will continue to support them in their peaceful pursuit of positive change in our country and around the world. The San Francisco 49ers will continue to work toward bringing communities, and those who serve them, closer together.”

Over the past two seasons, the 49ers’ former starting quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, and starting safety, Eric Reid, have been outspoken in their comments regarding the president and his policies and have lodged protests during the playing of the national anthem.

York’s statement came the same day that Trump rescinded an invitation to the White House for another Bay Area team, the Golden State Warriors.
