Tim Ryan on Hoyer: ‘Until he’s carried off on a shield, he’s staying out there’

The 49ers are off to a disastrous 0-4 start this season and quarterback Brian Hoyer is taking the majority of the blame. His offensive struggles have many fans calling for his demotion to make way for rookie backup C.J. Beathard.

Yet, Tim Ryan voiced his support for Hoyer with Murph & Mac Monday morning, and believes he is doing all he can to keep the 49ers close to their opponents each week.

“You don’t have to stand up and wave your flag for that guy,” Ryan said. “I mean, the last three quarters of the Rams game showed you what he’s capable of.”

After disappointing starts against the Carolina Panthers and Seattle Seahawks, in which he combined for 292 yards and two interceptions, Hoyer came out firing against the Los Angeles Rams.

In what turned out to be a 41-39 loss for the 49ers, Hoyer threw his first two touchdowns of the season, put up 332 yards with only one interception and a 62 percent completion rate in 37 pass attempts.

“Now, that has to be consistent, it’s got to be much more consistent no question,” Ryan said. “He’s got to make better decisions in those critical situations, but he also does some really good things and believe it or not, he’s really had the 49ers in the last three games. No, it’s not time to replace him yet.”

The 49ers know that Hoyer played to his potential against the Rams, but it is paramount for him to keep the ball rolling. Ryan pointed out that Hoyer needs to work on sticking to his first read and spend less time in the pocket, but he is confident the veteran quarterback will continue to start for the 49ers.

“That guy, until he’s carried off on a shield, he’s staying out there,” Ryan said.
