Bruce Bochy recovering well after third heart surgery

After undergoing his second ablation, which burns away heart tissue, and his third heart procedure in the past three years, Giants manager Bruce Bochy is showing signs of a smooth recovery.

“The procedure went extremely well and I’m feeling better,” Bochy said, according to Andrew Baggarly. “I’m grateful for the doctors and want to thank everyone who has reached out with well wishes.”

Bochy’s first heart surgery came in February 2015, in which a pair of stents were inserted to clear two 90 percent blockages to his heart. Fast forward two years later and Bochy underwent his first ablation in April. He knew a second procedure was necessary and after considering scheduling it during the All-Star break in July, he decided to undergo the surgery after the season.

After the Giants finished the season 64-98 and Bochy underwent his procedure, he plans to rest for a week and is expected to return to San Francisco on Oct. 23 for organizational meetings. His ablation should not hinder the skipper from travelling to the Dominican Republic to visit the Giants’ academy and vacation in Costa Rica.

Looking ahead, Bochy sees no reason why his reoccurring heart issues will impact his ability to serve the final two years of contract with the Giants, noting that both Indians manager Terry Francona and former 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh underwent similar procedures.

“I don’t want anyone to think this has an effect on my work, or ability to work,” Bochy said after the season ended. “This is something that is not uncommon.”
