Former 49ers’ quarterback Colin Kaepernick has reportedly filed a grievance against NFL owners for collusion under the league’s collective bargaining agreement.

The status of Kaepernick’s grievance was first reported by Mike Freeman of Bleacher Report and Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports.

Kaepernick has been out of work since the end of last season after opting out of his contract with San Francisco in March. The 29-year-old spent six seasons in the NFL with the 49ers, and took over as the team’s starting quarterback in Week 5 of the 2016 season after head coach Chip Kelly benched Blaine Gabbert.

According to Sports Illustrated, collusion occurs when “two or more teams or the league and at least one team, join to deprive a player of a contractually earned right. Such a right is normally found in the collective bargaining agreement signed by a league and its players’ association.”

According to Freeman, Kaepernick has hired attorney Mark Geragos, who has represented a number of high-profile clients. Freeman also reported that Kaepernick plans to release a statement regarding his grievance in the near future.
