Joe Montana, Dwight Clark to address crowd at Levi’s Stadium Sunday

The 49ers will honor the 1981 Super Bowl winning team at halftime of Sunday’s game vs. the Cowboys at Levi’s Stadium, the first of the franchise’s five Super Bowl winning squads. The two players responsible for that team’s most iconic play, Joe Montana and Dwight Clark, are scheduled to address the crowd the team announced on Tuesday.

Thirty-six members of that team, who famously beat the Cowboys in the NFC Championship Game, are expected to be in attendance. While most players are expected to be honored on the field, Clark, who announced in March he was diagnosed with ALS, will likely make his first public comments since that time in a suite.

Montana and Clark helped begin the 49ers dynasty in earnest when they combined for what would become to be known as “The Catch,” a six-yard touchdown pass that Clark caught with his finger tips in the back of the end zone, giving San Francisco a 28-27 lead over the Cowboys late in the fourth quarter, and punching their ticket to the franchise’s first ever Super Bowl.

Former Hall of Fame owner Eddie DeBartolo, the uncle of current 49ers CEO Jed York, will also be in attendance, as the 49ers look to get their first win of the season in front of the former greats.
