Five sacks doom C.J. Beathard’s first start

After the game, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan was more clipped in his responses following a 40-10 flattening to the Cowboys at Levi’s Stadium. However, something he was seemingly looking forward to was watching film on Monday with rookie quarterback C.J. Beathard.

“He’s a tough kid and he will learn from this,” Shanahan said. “It’s going to be cool tomorrow to watch the tape and coach him up a little bit.”

Beathhard’s statistical performance was nearly identical to last week when he nearly brought the 49ers back from a 17-0 deficit to beat Washington. In this game, the 49ers were never close as Beathard completed 22 of 38 passes for 235 yards and no touchdowns or interceptions. The big difference was pressure, with Dallas throwing a myriad of blitzes at Beathard, which is something the Cowboys hadn’t done yet this season.

Beathard was sacked five times, including a crucial one right before the half, when he fumbled on Dallas’ 5-yard line after getting blind sided by defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence.

“Obviously, it’s a ton of things,” Beathard said when asked what he can learn from the game. “Every play you can look at something and critique it a little bit.”
