49ers release former third round draft choice Will Redmond

There might not be a busier man in football than 49ers’ general manager John Lynch.

Less than 24 hours after acquiring a potential franchise quarterback of the future in Jimmy Garoppolo, Lynch sent cornerback Rashard Robinson to the New York Jets in a trade and also released former third round draft choice Will Redmond.

Redmond was a third round pick in 2016 under previous general manager Trent Baalke, and Lynch continued his efforts to build the 49ers’ roster from scratch by releasing the cornerback who has spent the entire season on injured reserve. The 49ers’ 2017 third round draft choice, rookie Ahkello Witherspoon, was named a starter at cornerback last week, meaning San Francisco no longer needed Robinson or Redmond.

The 5-foot-11, 186-pound Redmond was a product of Mississippi State, and never appeared in a game for San Francisco.

The new 49ers’ regime has attempted to completely overhaul San Francisco’s roster, and Robinson and Redmond were the latest casualties of the franchise’s rebuild.
