Former San Francisco Giants’ infielder Matt Duffy announced the loss of his cat Skeeter on Sunday evening.

Duffy’s cat drew a devoted following on social media during Duffy’s time with the Giants, as the cat grew in popularity due to its rather robust size for a house cat. Duffy said his cat weighed upward of 30 pounds, but last spring, Duffy told KNBR that Skeeter had been on a diet and said the cat was in “the best shape of his life.”

Duffy started Skeeter’s own Instagram page, which maintained a following of nearly 17,000 users as of Sunday night.

The popular infielder was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays in the midst of the 2016 season in a deal that allowed the Giants to acquire left-handed pitcher Matt Moore. Duffy finished second in National League Rookie of the Year voting in 2015, as the Long Beach State product hit .295 with 12 home runs and 77 RBIs.
