49ers waive Ray-Ray Armstrong, plan to activate Tank Carradine

The 49ers have struggled with depth issues along the defensive line this season, and on Friday, head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that the unit would be receiving a reinforcement this weekend.

San Francisco plans to activate defensive lineman Tank Carradine from injured reserve this weekend as Carradine will play for the first time since sustaining an ankle injury against the Los Angeles Rams on September 21.

To clear room for Carradine’s roster spot, the 49ers’ linebacker unit took a hit, as Shanahan announced that the team planned to cut linebacker Ray-Ray Armstrong. The 49ers’ second-leading tackler, Armstrong started the first five games of the 2017 season, but fell behind Reuben Foster and Brock Croyle on the depth chart and didn’t figure to have a prominent role during the second half of the season.

Armstrong agreed to a two-year contract extension with San Francisco last December under former general manager Trent Baalke, but after Foster and Croyle established themselves as the 49ers’ starters, Armstrong began to fall out of favor.

While the 49ers’ defense gets Carradine back this Sunday in Seattle, the team will be without starting safety Adrian Colbert, a seventh round draft choice in 2017 who has been one of several young bright spots for San Francisco in recent weeks. Colbert will sit after undergoing thumb surgery.
