Giants one of three teams engaging with Marlins on Stanton [report]

Giancarlo Stanton has reportedly made it clear that the Los Angeles Dodgers are his preferred destination.

But according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Dodgers are not among the three teams that are currently engaging with the Miami Marlins about a potential blockbuster trade.

Rosenthal reported Tuesday morning the San Francisco Giants, Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals are the teams in discussion with the Marlins, but that three other mystery teams are also capable of entering the mix. It’s unclear whether the Dodgers are one of the three teams on the “periphery” as Rosenthal reported, but few reports, if any, have indicated the Dodgers are interested in adding Stanton’s contract to their payroll.

It’s possible the Stanton trade talks could drag on through the winter, in part because the 2017 National League MVP has a full no-trade clause that allows him to strike down any deal in which he’s involved. If Stanton tells the Marlins he won’t play for the Giants, then San Francisco has no chance of landing the Miami slugger.

The Giants are considered one of the teams that could handle assuming a massive portion of the $295 million Stanton is owed over the next 10 seasons, but San Francisco’s front office has also indicated it has luxury tax threshold concerns that make it challenging for the team to take on added salary.

Stanton hit 59 home runs and drove in 132 runs for the Marlins last season, but with a new ownership group assuming control of the franchise, Miami appears determined to cut down on its payroll this offseason and begin the process of a rebuild.
