Former Golden State Warriors forward Matt Barnes will retire from professional basketball, according to a post published on his personal Instagram account Monday.

Barnes, 37, was a popular member of the Warriors from 2006 to 2008, including the “We Believe” team that upset the No. 1-seeded Dallas Mavericks as the No. 8 seed in the first round of the 2007 NBA Playoffs.

Known for his toughness and physicality, Barnes, whose NBA career stretched from 2002 to 2017, was released in the middle of the 2016-2017 season by the Sacramento Kings, whom he started the season with. He rejoined the Warriors in 2017 shortly after an injury to Kevin Durant. He remained on the team through the end of the regular season and the 2017 postseason, where he and the Warriors won the NBA Championship over the Cleveland Cavaliers, the first of Barnes’ career.

Barnes once again became a free agent at the conclusion of the 2016-2017 season, and was not signed by any professional teams.
