Garoppolo expands on 49ers’ momentum, his leadership, looks ahead to Titans

SANTA CLARA – The San Francisco 49ers won their second game a row over the Houston Texans Sunday, marking their first back-to-back wins of this season and first since 2014.

Eliminated from playoff contention in 2017, the team is looking to try to build momentum toward next year.

The catalyst of the 49ers’ late-season turnaround has arguably been newly acquired quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who has led the 49ers to wins in each of his first two starts with the team.

Garoppolo met the media on Wednesday, and discussed how he and the team hope to continue to build on the momentum they have created with their last two wins.

“We have a little bit of momentum with us right now,” Garoppolo said. “First and foremost, we have to go practice well today. Get through a good week of practice, preparation. I think that’s really what’s helped us these last two weeks is just we’re putting in the time. Practice has been good tempo and everything, and I think that carries over to Sunday.”

He also expanded on the leadership role he has on the team, as well as his personal leadership philosophy.

“I think I’ve always kind of naturally just been a leader, in a sense,” Garoppolo said. “And I think quarterbacking, it kind of comes with the territory. I’ve always thought leadership, if you fake it, act like something you’re not, guys are going to see right through that, and you can’t really respect that. So I think everyone does it a different way, and does it their own way, and that’s what I’m trying to do.”

The 49ers hope to extend their winning streak to three games this Sunday against the Titans at Levi’s Stadium, which will be Garoppolo’s first home start as a 49er. Though he entered for a few plays at the end of the 49ers’ home game against Seattle, Garoppolo neither started nor played an entire game.

“It’s definitely exciting, getting that opportunity,” Garoppolo said. “Against Seattle, I had a couple of plays, but I think it’ll be a fun atmosphere. Hopefully, the crowd comes out and they’re loud and helping our defense out and everything, and we’ll make some plays for them. It’ll be a fun environment.”

The 49ers host the Titans at Levi’s Stadium live on KNBR this Sunday at 1:25 p.m.
