49ers promote former Seahawks’ cornerback to active roster

The 49ers are hurting for depth in the defensive backfield, and a day ahead of their matchup with the Tennessee Titans, San Francisco worked to find a reinforcement.

On Saturday afternoon, the 49ers announced they promoted cornerback Tyvis Powell from the practice squad to the active roster. A second-year product out of Ohio State, Powell appeared in eight games for the Seattle Seahawks last season and primarily played with special teams units.

The 49ers made room for Powell on the roster by placing offensive tackle Trent Brown on the injured reserve list. Brown is scheduled to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery, which will leave the 49ers without one of their best pass protectors for the final three games of the regular season.

Powell will wear No. 45 on Sunday, and could be among the team’s 46 active players if either Greg Mabin or Ahkello Witherspoon are unable to play due to injury. Mabin is nursing a calf injury while Witherspoon is battling a sore knee.
