Former White Sox infielder announces deal with Giants

The Giants are looking to bolster their infield depth and on Friday evening, former Chicago White Sox utility player Alen Hanson announced on his Instagram that he inked a deal with San Francisco.

Hanson was the second infielder to sign with the Giants on Friday, as Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reported the franchise agreed to terms with former Red Sox second baseman Josh Rutledge on a Minor League deal earlier in the day. Henry Schulman of The San Francisco Chronicle reported that like the contract Rutledge signed, Hanson also agreed to a Minor League deal.

Hanson hit .222 over 106 games in 2017, splitting time with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago White Sox. Hanson finished the season in Chicago, where he hit four home runs and drove in 10 runs. Hanson also brings an element of speed to the organization, as he stole 11 bases on 14 attempts last year.

After trading for Evan Longoria earlier this week, the Giants may not need a backup corner infielder on their 25-man roster. Kelby Tomlinson has the ability to make spot starts at third base, while Buster Posey can back up Brandon Belt at first base when Belt needs a rest.

The Giants also don’t have great organizational depth at middle infield positions, as the franchise doesn’t have high-level prospects coming through the system at shortstop and second base. Rutledge and Hanson might battle with Orlando Calixte for the right to a Major League job, or all three could vie for playing time with AAA Sacramento this season.
