NFL mics capture McVay praising Garoppolo to York, Lynch

Rams’ head coach Sean McVay was out spreading the good word on Sunday morning.

While McVay was preparing his team to play its final regular season contest against San Francisco, he also took time to speak with several key members of the 49ers about new quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

McVay was mic’ed up on Sunday and on Thursday afternoon, the NFL released audio of some of his pregame conversations, including one with general manager John Lynch.

“That guy (Garoppolo) looks pretty good playing quarterback for you,” McVay told Lynch. “He’s a stud, man.”

McVay has done an impressive job in his own right guiding the Los Angeles Rams to the NFC West title and a playoff appearance, and based off of his work with second-year signal-caller Jared Goff, McVay knows how to coach up a quarterback. During a conversation with 49ers’ owner Jed York, McVay said there’s more to like about Garoppolo than just his physical traits.

“He’s got a nice way about himself to I was just telling Jon Embree (49ers’ tight ends coach), you can only see so much, when a guy is mic’ed, just listening to him interact with his teammates, you like that guy,” McVay said.

In another instance, a camera caught McVay catching up with a different 49ers’ coach and not surprisingly, that conversation also centered around Garoppolo.

“His ability to speed it up, he sure is wired the right way, isn’t he?” McVay said.
