SAN FRANCISCO–2017 was a challenging year for Giants’ manager Bruce Bochy, and the team’s 64-98 record wasn’t the only reason Bochy had a rough go of it.

Bochy underwent a pair of cardiac ablation surgeries –one in April and one in October– to address his atrial fibrillation. The calendar year took a toll on Bochy, but in recent phone conversations with reporters, the Giants’ manager has sounded upbeat and refreshed, while conveying how eager he is to return to the Giants’ complex in Scottsdale for Spring Training.

During the Giants’ introductory press conference for new third baseman Evan Longoria on Friday, general manager Bobby Evans fielded a question about the status of Bochy’s health. Evans was asked whether the acquisitions of Longoria and former Pirates’ outfielder Andrew McCutchen have rejuvenated Bochy, and Evans said the 12th-year manager is excited about the opportunities in front of the team.

“I’ve seen Bruce Bochy going back to October, just the load off of his shoulders, just having the procedure and how much better he’s felt,” Evans said. “He’s done some traveling this winter, obviously just feels, having spent some time with him recently, just feels so much better and I think the fact the lineup is coming together and the club, I think his excitement is growing going to Scottsdale. Fan fest first but Scottsdale after that and the season ahead.”

Bochy managed all three World Series teams earlier this decade, and is widely considered a lock to earn a coveted spot in the Hall of Fame. Though the 98 losses the Giants suffered last season matched the most defeats a Bochy-led team has ever suffered, San Francisco’s recent work to restructure the team’s roster has given everyone in the franchise a reason to be optimistic.
