Jimmy Garoppolo cashing in on Patriots’ playoff success

All Jimmy Garoppolo does is win.

After leading the 49ers to a 5-0 record as a starter this season, Garoppolo is still winning big even though San Francisco didn’t make the playoffs. The new face of the 49ers’ franchise can cash another playoff check as his former team, the New England Patriots, advanced to the Super Bowl on Sunday following a 24-20 comeback win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Garoppolo earned a $79,000 paycheck with the Patriots’ win over the Jags, and he stands to make even more money if Tom Brady leads New England to a Super Bowl win over the Philadelphia Eagles. If his old franchise takes down Nick Foles, Garoppolo will reportedly make $112,000, but even if the Patriots lose, the 49ers’ signal-caller will rake in $56,000.

Because Garoppolo spent more than half of the regular season on New England’s roster, he’s eligible for playoff compensation. He’s not the only 49ers’ player taking strolls to the bank this offseason, as defensive end Cassius Marsh is collecting the same amount of money as Garoppolo after he stuck with New England for the first nine games of the year.

The extra money is surely nice, but it’s nothing compared to what Garoppolo will soon command as a free agent. The 49ers are expected to offer Garoppolo a long-term contract this offseason, and if the two sides can’t agree on a deal, San Francisco will use its franchise tag to ensure Garoppolo remains under center next season.
