The 49ers are adding the son of one of the greatest defensive minds in NFL history to their coaching staff.

Chris Kiffin, son of longtime defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, is leaving his brother Lane’s staff at Florida Atlantic University, and joining the 49ers as a pass-rush specialist coach, as first reported by Bruce Feldman of Sports Illustrated.

Chris Kiffin, 26, served as FAU’s defensive coordinator last year, and helped improve the team to 34th in the NCAA in points allowed per game (22.7) last year, up from 123rd in points per game in 2016. Kiffin has held coaching jobs with Idaho, Nebraska, USC, Arkansas State and Ole Miss.

Chris Kiffin is the fourth assistant coach to leave Lane’s staff this offseason after the team went 11-3 in his first year as head coach. Offensive coordinator Kendal Briles left for the same position with Houston, while offensive line coach Garin Justice was hired by UNLV and defensive backs coach Corey Batoon is off to Hawaii.

Lane Kiffin served as the Raiders’ head coach under Al Davis from 2007-2008.
