Diamondbacks sign Jarrod Dyson to two-year deal [report]

Shortly after news broke that J.D. Martinez had signed with the Boston Red Sox, ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick reported on Monday afternoon that the Arizona Diamondbacks signed outfielder Jarrod Dyson to a two-year deal — worth 7.5 million, according to FanRag’s Jon Heyman.

Before signing Austin Jackson in late January, the Giants reportedly listed Dyson, 33, atop their list of free agent starting centerfielders with Jon Jay and Cameron Maybin following respectively.

The Giants added much-needed depth to their outfield by signing Jackson, but they could still use an everyday centerfielder and their top choice just signed his way off the market. That leaves Jay and Maybin as the remaining everyday centerfielders on the free agent market that the Giants have been reportedly linked to.

In four of his eight major-league seasons, Jay has posted a positive number of defensive runs saved, his best coming in 2011 when he boasted 9 DRS. Yet, the 32-year-old hasn’t posted a position number of defensive runs saved since 2015.

Jay did his best to make up for his defensive shortcomings with a .290-or-better batting average the last two seasons. Jay finished last year batting .296 and started 86 games in the outfield for the Chicago Cubs.

As for Maybin, his 2 DRS was a significant improvement after finishing 2016 with -11, and 2015 with -16, but the 30-year-old’s batting average dropped to .228 after it was .315 in 2016.

Outside of free agency, the Giants were reportedly in trade talks with the Cincinnati Res for their centerfielder, Billy Hamilton. With 9 DRS last season and speed on the basepaths, the 27-year-old presented a great option for the Giants, but their unwillingness to part ways with prospect Heliot Ramos proved to be a roadblock in negotiations.
