49ers were interested in Marcus Peters before he was traded to Rams [report]

With the 49ers locking up Jimmy Garoppolo to a long-term deal, one of their division rivals made a move on Friday that should make match-ups between the two teams even more interesting from here on out.

The Rams are expected to trade for two-time Pro Bowl defensive back Marcus Peters according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Adding insult to injury, the 49ers (who are incredibly thin at corner) were also reportedly interested in trading for Peters’ services before the deal with the Rams was announced.

Peters, 25, is considered one of the best young cornerbacks in football, and was named a first team All-Pro in 2016. After being selected with the 18th overall pick by the Chiefs in 2015, Peters picked off 19 passes in three seasons with Kansas City.

The Rams trading for Peters seems to indicate that Los Angeles will not re-sign cornerback Trumaine Johnson, a six-year veteran who has recorded 18 picks in his NFL career. If he does indeed hit the open market, he may be a target for the 49ers.
