Gilbert Arenas recounts getting choked, run over by Chris Mills after stealing his throwback jersey

On Wednesday evening Gilbert Arenas joined Ryan Covay on KNBR Tonight, and told an incredible story involving a Fran Tarkenton throwback jersey, chicken wings and former teammate Chris Mills. Arenas didn’t detail exactly when the story took place, but we can assume it was sometime between 2001 and 2003, when the two were teammates with the Warriors.

“Back then, throwback jerseys were like the thing,” Arenas began. “Just like cars and jewelry, every athlete wants to be better than the next athlete. So I guess (Chris Mills) ordered this Tarkenton jersey. I don’t know who the hell this person is, but he’s been bragging about this jersey for the longest. When he got the jersey he was like ‘I’m gonna wear it.’ So before he got to wear it, I broke into his house and saw it right on the pool table, all in the plastic, brand new. I took the jersey.

“So on the plane we’re sitting there, doing our little gambling thing, and I just decided I’m going to poke the bear. I open up my jacket shirt so everyone can see the Tarkenton jersey. ‘Hey ya’ll, just got this Tarkenton jersey. This goofy ass dude, little softy, and I stole it from a little softy,’ but everybody knows it’s Chris Mills. He’s not budging, he’s not doing anything. I can’t get a reaction out of him. So I said ‘hey, can I get some chicken wings around here?’

“So I got the chicken wings and I was like ‘man, nothing is better than chicken wings on a plane. Anyone got a napkin?’ And I just started wiping it on the Tarkenton jersey. If you would’ve seen everyones face..’oh he’s dead.’ And sure enough, he jumped over the table in the middle of me swallowing the chicken wing, he’s choking the living life out of me. It took the whole plane to get him off me.

“After that road trip, unfortunately he’s my ride home ’cause we live next door to each other. So after the chocking incident, he didn’t say anything about anything the rest of the trip, which was scarier. I’m trying to gauge him on the ride home like ‘man, we’re playing well.’ He hasn’t said a word. So while I’m getting out of the car, my stuff is in the backseat and I’m like ‘never go behind a guy’s car because he’s going to back up on me,’ so I’m just going to walk in the front of the car. I walked in front of the car because my garage is right there. Sure enough: Boom! He runs me into my garage. Dented the garage, my leg is bruised. I was tortured as a rookie, but I deserved every minute of it.”
