Steve Kerr praises Kevin Love’s public battle with mental health

OAKLAND – Tuesday morning Kevin Love posted an article for the Players’ Tribune titled, “Everyone Is Going Through Something.” In that article, he details a panic attack he experienced right after halftime during a game against the Atlanta Hawks.

“Looking back now I know I could have really benefited from having someone to talk to over the years,” Love wrote. “But I didn’t share — not to my family, not to my best friends, not in public. Today, I’ve realized I need to change that.”

Love talks about how he always thought mental health was someone else’s problem, and said he’s opening up for his own benefit, but also for the benefit of others.

At the end of Steve Kerr’s media availability before the Golden State Warriors host the Brooklyn Nets, a reporter asked Kerr about Love’s article. Kerr had nothing but respect for what Love wrote.

“I admire (Kevin Love’s) willingness to come out and talk about something that is an issue for a lot of people,” Kerr said Tuesday night. “And so I’m sure his reasoning was to try to help others who are going through something similar.

“So I think it’s great. Same with Demar DeRozan. I think what Kevin said was…and I read the article this morning. I thought what he said that meant the most to me was, ‘We’re all going through something.’ It’s true. We’re all human beings. You know, we all have our own story. We all have our own lives, and nobody’s is perfect.

“And so, everybody’s got things. And you need friends. And you need support. And you need help to get through everything. And it doesn’t matter if you’re an NBA player or the average guy. It’s just…we’re human beings. So I appreciate him coming out, I thought that was great.”
